When the Paradise Garage shut its doors
in 1987, I thought I would never again
hear music that would inspire me to put
in work on the dance floor. Now, every
Sunday afternoon, the hills of Fort Greene
are alive with rhythms and the sounds
of music. The founder of Masters of Soul,
DJ Sadiq, along with DJ Tabu and DJ Jeffrey
Mendoza, have issued the call, and true
music disciples are responding.
Cumberland Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn,
summer of 2002 is where it first began.
The Brothas of Masters of Soul realized
that present day music lacks real meaning
and is too commercial. They also understood
that the bottom line of most clubs is
simply making money, moving the crowd
is an afterthought. Driven by the desire
to create community access to alternative
music, networking opportunities, and an
environment where past disciples could
bring the next generation [their kids];
they created Soul Summit. The response
has been overwhelming. They quickly outgrew
Cumberland Park and with the help of the
deceased councilman, Hon. James Davis,
secured Fort Greene Park, where on Sundays
at 3pm they can be found playing the music
and healing the people. You can expect
to hear dance classics that older heads
thought they would never hear again from
the Peach Boys and MFSB, to house classics
from Fingers Inc. and Liz Torres, to contemporary
music that is in the spirit of this vibe
like Shaun Escoffrey and Maxwell.
Words cannot explain to the uninitiated
the magic of the Paradise Garage. The
songs people would blissfully sing along
with and add in a soul clap or stomp to,
were for that time and that era. However,
I’m grateful to have a place to
take the new converts, and let them feel
what we experienced; a place that upholds
the tradition of spreading the love and
light of music…….a Soul Summit.
