Irie Jamboree
@
Roy Wilkins Park
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Roy
Wilkins Park in Queens, reggae fans gathered
to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Irie
Jam Radio with the first annual Irie Jamboree.
In a carnival like atmosphere we were
treated to nine hours of performances
by artists from soca, hip hop, and, especially,
dancehall. The concerts mega star lineup
included Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder, Ce’Cile,
Baby Cham, Richie Stephens, Iwer George,
Invasion Band, Doug E. Fresh and KRS One,
just to name a few. Industry names like
Junior, founder of Ruff Stuff Studios,
Mikey Jarett, Maxine Greaves and Jabba
could be found enjoying the high energy
performances of Mr. Vegas, Mr. Lexx, and
Wayne Marshall.
The day of music and food honored Irie
Jam and, noted host DJ Roy, for their
unwavering commitment to bringing us reggae
music nonstop, and keeping New York’s
Caribbean massive plugged in to the latest
and greatest back home. Without Irie Jam’s
support, many of today’s dancehall
success stories would have never had a
platform for airplay in New York City.
So congratulations Irie Jam and DJ Roy,
we look forward to another 10, 20, 30
years of pure Caribbean music. omf
