Jamaica
Jamaica had the highest number of stopover tourist arrivals in its history during the month of July—144,039 arrivals in July, representing a 4.6% increase over arrival levels for July 2002 and is indicative of a new trend in growth over the years.

A sure way to kill agricultural exports…£4M worth of drugs found in yam exports to London. 52 Kg cocaine and 345 Kg of cannabis were found in the vegetable that arrived in Portsmouth docks on August 1, 2003.

The move by some Jamaican companies to cross-list on the T&T Stock Exchange (TTSE), has resulted in strong showings in trade prices on the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) by an overall increase of 24% during the first few weeks. JSE stocks that were cross-listed benefited from the “bullish” TTSE according to one company executive in Jamaica.


Trinidad & Tobago

The much touted construction boom that would provide hundreds of jobs to Tobagonians is about to take off. The projects are a new library, financial complex, transit hub and craft market, all in Scarborough, and a plaza and market in Roxborough.

Haiti
Residents of the town of Petit Goaul, Haiti are celebrating the introduction of electricity to their town. Although homes aren’t wired to receive electricity, just having streetlights is a giant step to improving their quality of life and hopefully well needed economic development.

Guyana
In an effort to enhance trade and build relationships with developed countries Guyana’s State President Bharrat Jugdeo has embarked on an overseas travel mission to countries such as China, Russia, Brazil and is slated to visit Nigeria later this year.

Barbados
A shining star in the Barbados education system, the Barbados Community College (BCC) has taken top honors in the Barbados scholarship stakes this year, by capturing 4 of the 7 scholarships approved by the Barbados Cabinet. BCC also dominated this year’s exhibitions, capturing 16 of 25 awards. The Principal attributed their success to the hard work of students, but especially their teachers.
