IRIE JAMBOREE 2004
By- Odette Flemming

No one could have asked for a more perfect day than that of the third annual Irie Jamboree. The sky was blue and the air was crisp. It was the complete opposite of the last big event sponsored by Irie Jam – we all remember the soggy soccer games. Not today, the stage was set, the park full of food and the line-up left fans expecting a marathon concert.

From the start of the show until the very end some eight hours later, the fans were thrilled with acts that did not disappoint. We supported the local artists and they blessed us with some amazing performances. The likes of Mikey Jarrett, Ed Robinson, Mr. Gadget, Wayne Smith, Sammy Dread, Chuck Fenda, KC Jockey and more kept the audience moving steadily toward the star filled evening. Ky-enie showed fans why he such high demand with his hi energy performance and guitar arrangements.

As the afternoon went on we heard from greats like Half Pint, Mr. Easy, Mad Cobra, Tanya Stephens and Red Rat whose stellar performance and unique costuming placed him as one of the night’s best. As darkness fell the music went to the next level. Though he was placed way too early in the schedule Frankie Paul reminded us why he is legend, Freddie McGregor took us back to original dancehall on a “Big Ship” and Luciano should bottle his energy for the masses. At one point during his performance he ended up climbing the side of the stage up on top of the speakers. Incredible. Then, of course, the moment of truth was upon us. The return of the king of dancehall – Shabba Ranks. Shabba took the stage and suddenly it was 1990 again, down to his trailer load a girls skirted in flags reppin’ various island nations.

A review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the poor behavior of our deejay Bounty Killer, who though backstage, refused to perform. He showed no regard for the thousands of fans who came out just to see him wrap up the show he decided that his ego was more important. Well we won’t let his tantrum ruin an otherwise off the hook event! Irie Jam you did it again!
