J Bourne
He is simply, J Bourne, philosophical
and mature beyond his almost thirty years,
fun-filled and engaging, sensitive yet
wildly comical. Qualities all juxtaposed
in this virgonian’s slender devastatingly
handsome frame. Never have I been so engaged
by a subject – a rich embodiment
of wisdom, class and gregarious spirit
with a smile that totally disarms you.
We got to talking around six and ended
(just because I had to go) at approximately
11:15 pm. The issues were diverse, political
and social in nature. He has a decidedly
strong opinion on community issues particularly
how we by our actions depreciate our communities,
and in many instances set very low standards
for ourselves. He speaks from a very informed
position having worked as a high school
counselor for seven years at two of Brooklyn’s
High Schools as well as at a halfway house
and a group home.
That this is no ordinary brother is
an understatement and may be cliché,
however as I will attempt to illuminate
J-his life and passions, you will come
to that conclusion too. He graduated from
York College, where he obtained a degree
in psychology. He is from a family of
six, with parents (mother Bajan, father
Guyanese) married for over forty-one years.
He, however, was born in the US. Music
is his passion, to put it mildly. After
all he purchased his first album of his
favorite artiste, Stevie Wonder at five.
In fact you would say he has somewhat
of a shrine to Stevie in his apartment.
An avid music collector, he has an extensive
collection, all sorted by labels, which
he knows like the back of his hand.
This fascination and scholarly-like
devotion to music has been parlayed into
what is now his career - a deejay. He
is known as the Hype Creator in the clubs
and parties he plays, which is in stark
contradiction to his usual quiet demeanor-well,
he listens to slow jams, the likes of
Luther or Stevie to ready him mentally
for his parties and to balance his thoughts
afterwards. He has positioned himself
as a deejay that is relevant to any genre
of music, thus his gigs know no boundaries
and promises to take him to places and
events in Europe and beyond. His ultimate
dream is producing R&B and Soul Music,
in his words “to bring back the
serious message of love to the music”.
This evolution from education to music
has the making of a carefully laid plan.
A stint at VP Records, where he spent
2 _ invaluable years as head of Radio
& Promotions, gave him the kind of
experience he would later use to form
J Bourne Entertainment, a stage name he
coined on an offer to audition for Saturday
Night Live. He has had many brushes with
stardom over the years, auditioning at
ten for a pepsi commercial and was runner-up
to Malcolm Jamal Warner for the Cosby
show.
On relationships, he tackles the subject
with as much clarity as a man well informed.
At sixteen he says he took out a subscription
to Essence Magazine and reads extensively,
books devoted to such issues. “From
a very young age,” he says, “I
wanted to be in a position to bring substance
to my interactions and experiences with
women. I go way beyond the physical and
appreciate more the identity, passion
and definition of self that a woman possesses”.
He is looking for someone with those qualities
and who will respect and understand the
relationship he has with his son. He enjoys
activities that celebrate life-walks in
the park, visiting museums, dining and
listening to the rain. In fact he loves
the rain so much that he has a CD with
only the sound of rain. His space is symbolic
of peace and harmony; candles, soft lights
and soulful music. He is a sincere altruistic
being who seeks compatibility in his companion.
J will embrace the right person but likes
to build from a base of friendship to
love. Is he your “Mr. Right”?
