BOB FREDERICK - D’ SPICE MAN
By: Andrea Daley

Radio is his passion, his life and dare I say his true love? Meet Bob Frederick - D’ Spiceman, as he is affectionately called. As Caribbean people, growing up we were influenced greatly by radio and Bob is no different. Hailing from the spice island of Grenada, Bob came to the United States when he was a mere teen, many (many) years ago to join his mom. Like many immigrants, the story is sweet; pursuing his dream of broadcasting and making a success of it. While studying at Westchester Community College, he got his first taste on-air at WARY-college radio. The experience was enough to further stir the fire and when Bob moved on to Medgar Evers College to pursue a degree in communication and broadcasting, he joined WYNE 91.5 FM- Campus Community Outreach Radio while also working with WVOX, in New Rochelle- experiences facilitated by Ken Williams who owned the airtime and with whom Bob was volunteering.

Bob’s career has seen many remarkable achievements over the years. He has worked as program director for stations WXXO and WXTN; Cuban owned stations in Florida, a position, which one could safely say led him to the now defunct WLIB (Caribbean Format). There Bob’s career was truly defined, functioning as Broadcaster/Music Director/Caribbean Program Director/Overall Program Director, at different times during his 13 year stint-1991-2004. He is proud of significant and innovative programming he brought to the station with the help of management. The creation of the extremely successful morning show; links to other stations in the Caribbean and Africa with the exchange of news, political and social issues, entertainment and sports; live coverage of the very historic visit by then President Clinton to the Caribbean on the signing of the Caribbean Basin Initiative, the increase of Caribbean on-air personalities among others.

Continuing the tradition of serving the Caribbean Community, Bob as president of Island Radio can now be heard on 93.5fm WRTN -1-3 pm and by the time you read this, you may tune in to 930am WPAT 6-9 am for D’Spiceman’s new morning show. With the help of Edmund Sadio, Bob’s business partner, Island Radio will continue to bring you news, information and music, staying true to the community it serves.
