YVAD
What do you say when it seems like everybody
wants to be a deejay and nobody wants
to sing anymore? You can say that thankfully
there is Yvad. Yvad is a reggae artist
who is true to the artform and true to
the culture. Even though he had been in
the industry for many years, his notoriety
increased when he was being groomed in
the Tuff Gong camp along with the sons
of Reggae royalty such as Ziggy, Ky-mani
and Stephen Marley. At that time his talent
was so prominent that he was featured
in a reggae special that was produced
for and rotated heavily on BET. He describes
it as one of the most beautiful times
in his life.
As we move to this new day Yvad’s
soulful voice and songs of inspiration
and peace can be found on his newly released
album Justice (Ruff Stuff Records). In
a recent interview, he had this to say
about the meaning behind the title of
his new album, “The album is called
Justice because it is dealing with the
issues of the world today, the struggles
of the people, justice that is not there
for us today, justice that mankind needs
on a whole.”
Yvad’s music flows over the strumming
of an acoustic guitar, which is a gift
that was shared with him by a talented
uncle. With family being the cornerstone
of his life, he composed “Oh Mother”,
as a tribute to his own mom, and actually
wrote this beautiful song while sitting
right in front of her playing his guitar.
His steadfast belief in Rastafari, his
rooting in the traditional music of Bob
Marley, Luciano and many others who wish
to promote the spirituality of reggae
music will hold Yvad firm as he waits
for the rest of us to see what he already
knows – his time is now.
