I recently had the pleasure of
sitting down with the newly crowned
2003 Soca Monarch King of New York,
after his live performance at Club
Decade. The crowd gyrated, swayed
and sang along to this Trinidadian
native’s popular soca rhythms.
Meshach, who had been performing
for over ten years, actually got
his start in reggae music. During
his years in the industry he has
opened for reggae artists like Burning
Spears, Black Uhuru, and Everton
Blender. He has even graced the
stage before some R&B memorables
such as SWV and The Ohio Players.
So what brought him back to soca
music? “Well it was my Trinidadian
heritage and culture that really
solidified me as a soca artist.
Performing soca music is a natural
feeling.”
How did it feel to be crowned
Soca Monarch King of New York? “It
was truly a privilege to be in that
position.” Meshach believes
that this honor has helped him to
make a “complete start”
in defining himself as strictly
a soca artist. His music can be
found in stores on Hometown Studio’s
“Soca Crossover #4”.
He is working on a solo album due
to be released in 2004. omf
