Calypso Dreams,
a film by Trinidadian movie makers
Geoffrey Dunn and
Michael Horne,
will be making its North American
debut on October 7th at the Mill
Valley Film Festival in
California. Filmed on location in
Trinidad, the movie salutes legendary
performers like the Mighty
Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Mighty Duke
and Lord Superior,
and pays homage to deceased
legends Grandmaster Kitchener and
Lord Pretender. The film won the
2002 Best Caribbean Documentary
honor at the Jamerican
Film and Music Festival.
Def Jam has dipped their toe into
the Caribbean music scene. In a
joint venture with The Heineken
Music Initiative, Def Jam
co-sponsored Def Jamaica
on James Bond Beach in
Jamaica. They are expected to release
their latest volume in the Red Star
Sounds series titled Red Star Sounds,
Volume 3: Def Jamaica featuring
the wickedest blend of dancehall
and hip hop. Some combinations to
look for are Lexxus
with Capone and
Noriega and Method
Man along side Damian
and Stephen Marley.
New York’s R&B radio
station, 98.7 Kiss FM
is adding a new Caribbean music
show featuring DJ Magnum.
The show will air on Sunday nights
from 10 pm until midnight. Surely
the Caribbean massive must tune
in so we can keep this show alive
and build up its time slot in the
future.
The Haitian posse has only a few
more months to wait for the release
of Wyclef Jean’s Creole CD.
Wyclef has created
a complete album of songs sung strictly
in Creole to commemorate the bicentennial
of the Haitian independence. The
release is planned for 2004!!
WARD 21 has recently
released their second album on Greensleeves
Records. The album titled “You
Know How We Roll”
is set to jump off with tracks like
“Kouchie Zone” and “Hotta
Betta Phatta”. This group
is ready to go big time, they linked
up with former Lexxus manager, Earlton,
who has already gotten them a European
endorsement deal with Pelle Pelle.
Ce’Cile,
the next woman of dancehall who
is set to blow, has inked a three
album deal with Delicious
Vinyl. Her debut album,
Bad Gyal, has not yet been scheduled
for release. Her current single,
“Do It To Me”, on the
Coolie Dance riddim is still swimming
in controversy in JA because of
its lyrical content. But after seeing
her rip up the stage at Irie Jamboree
in New York, there is eager anticipation
for her success!
Sean Paul’s
done it again!! His latest collaboration
with Beyonce on
her single “Baby Boy”
has brought him his second #1 song
on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop
Singles & Tracks chart in 2003.
VP Record’s Reggae
Gold 2003 is still riding
the charts with its quiet success.
Released in June, it is home to
many of the year’s top reggae
performers and sellers. This compilation
CD is the only place to find songs
like Elephant Man’s
“Pon de River, Pon de Bank”,
in its 6th week on Billboard Radio’s
Top 100, and Sasha’s
“Dat Sexy Body” as well
as remixes of “No Letting
Go” and Busta’s “Make
It Clap”. Many crossover dancehall
fans have added to the record breaking
sales of this album.
