Story - Tanya Stephens |
True to her lyrics Reggae
music's newest chart topper, Tanya Stephens
graciously greeted the press at the VP
Records 25th Anniversary concert. She
strolled in to the press gallery dressed
in a white cowboy hat and matching boots
as if declaring herself the new sheriff
in town. |

In the 1950’s a
seasonal worker entered the American South
to earn wages and gained much, much more.
Clement “Coxsone” Dodd walked
away with a dream. He had witnessed first
hand the outdoor dances where Southern
workers gathered to hear the latest pop
music. Dodd returned home not only with
a determination to create the same atmosphere,
but with the audio equipment and American
vinyl to do it. In 1954 Coxsone Downbeat
Sound System was born and began an island
wide competition to see which sound system
could draw the biggest crowd and, more
importantly, who could consistently introduce
the latest hits. |

Event
Review - Celebrity Soccer Match |
This Memorial Day weekend,
Roy Wilkins Park played host to the Fifth
Annual Irie Jam Celebrity Soccer Match.
It was a rain or shine event that pitted
American based deejays and artists against
those based on the island. This day decided
to be baptismal so the event was blessed
with a steady stream of chilly rain. Not
much fun for the spectators, but still
hundreds of die hard fans filled the stands
to see the likes of Cobra, Richie Stephens,
Plucky Ranks, Mr. Lexxus, Ward 21, Red
Rat, Ky-enie, DJ Roy, Glamour Wayne, Kiprich,
Tony Curtis and more, face of for two
fun-filled matches. |

Steelpan
Jazz at Alice Tully Hall Lincoln Center |
The almost sold-out,
1,096-seat Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln
Center was host to an innovative musical
showpiece entitled An Acoustic Revolution:
A Steel Pan Jazz concert. Premiere
artists from the global pan community
commanded attention for three hours on
the Sunday evening affair, featuring the
likes of the ADLIB Youth Symphony, who
filled the hall with jazz-influenced standards
interpreted in steel. The fifteen-member
orchestra moved expertly through
a musical vista of pan works as
the opening act. Andy Narell, who
is a proven staple in the pan world, took
the stage with his band directly after
and delivered an infectious session to
which the near-capacity audience responded
favorably.

Personalities - Hailes Castello
 |
Mention the name Hailes
Castello, singer, deejay, songwriter,
the emperor of Karaoke in the Caribbean
Community and you would have identified
one of the most affable, yet highly underated
entertainers around. Karaoke as we know
it has not been the same since this Vincentian,
unwittingly ventured into that area of
entertainment a few years ago. Despite
years of us trying desperately to take
our bathroom singing to John Public with
the hope of adulation, affirmation and
acclaim, (yes, to bus out!!) we never
stopped to think that we were singing
everybody else’s song except our
own...reggae, calypso, the like. |

Next Up - Marsha Morrison |
Vivacious, sexy, beautiful
and multi-talented, are just a few of
the words that come to mind when describing
singer/songwriter Marsha Morrison.
Realizing at an early age that writing
and performing were a part of her destiny,
Marsha wasted no time in harnessing those
skills. With musical influences like Bob
Marley, Marcia Griffiths, and Tina Turner,
it's no wonder Marsha writes and sings
with such passion. And true to her mentors,
she has mastered the ability to leave
fans speechless at live performances. |
