Beres
Hammond
30th Anniversary Concert
This was more than just
a concert, it was a celebration! Beres
Hammond has triumphed in the Reggae
music industry for three decades. The
thousands of people who filled the Nassau
Coliseum were more than just fans, they
were a following. Through show cancellations
and venue changes, they persisted until
they got what they were waiting for;
a chance to be serenaded by Reggae’s
finest. Headlining the event were the
likes of Buju Banton, the Wailing Souls
and Reggae’s crown jewel, Marcia
Griffiths. But the line up didn’t
stop there. Sizzla, Supa Chile, Mikey
Jarrett, Ginja, and more all lent their
immeasurable talents to this landmark
event.
Buju came to do damage
with intensity and energetic sprints
around the stage as he performed greats
like “Champion” and “Dickie”,
which propelled his initial success,
and his conscious classics that he has
become known for like “The Untold
Story”. He ran that stage until
they told him he had to come off! Crowds
sang along with Marcia to her classic,
“I Shall Sing”, and the
Wailing Souls reminded us of the roots
and culture in Reggae music. When Beres
finally took the stage the entire stadium
rose to their feet, screaming and waving
to Reggae’s own love doctor. Beres’
trademark raspy voice filled the air
with tunes like “No Disrespect”
and “Love Means Never Having to
Say Sorry”. Lovers swayed arm
in arm. Women called out their undying
love. The temperature was at a boil
when we were surprised by his duets
well-timed with Maxi Priest, Buju B.
and Marcia Griffiths! It was a remarkable
occasion!
Thanks to the diligent
effort of Ewart ‘Junior’
Burton, of Carifest fame, and the entire
crew at Legendary Records, a great time
was had by all!!
