Gil
Bailey
For well over thirty years Gil Bailey
has been at the forefront of Caribbean
radio with his own brand of Caribbean
entertainment, music & culture, catering
to listeners in North America and Canada.
Billed as the President of Caribbean
Radio, Gil has stamped his own style of
interaction and rapport with his audience
and has since established a loyal following
of very dedicated listeners. Without much
fanfare and public posturing he has given
many a Caribbean artiste the platform
for success; many a fledgling business
brand solidification and “promoted
the hell” out of many events on
either side of the spectrum, whether it’s
the formidable dancehall promoter or the
more cultured event organizer. He continues
to reinvent himself, keeping in touch
with his audience with an eclectic mix
of music, news, sports and current affairs
weekly.
This riveting story has its early beginnings,
on the rough streets of Love & Beeston
streets, in Kingston, Jamaica, where Gil
learnt valuable life lessons. He likes
to refer to himself as a having come through
the struggle. “I am happy and can
take pride in the fact that I never went
to jail or chose a life of crime.”
Migrating to London is the genesis of
his very long and storied career. His
first brush with fame was at the famed
Q Club in London, where his good friend,
Karl Simmonds, who was managed the club
recommended Gil as emcee for an event
there. The line-up featured notable acts
like Little Stevie Wonder, Solomon Burke,
DD Warwick, and Ben E King.
Relocating to New York, the media capital
of the world has been remarkable for Gil,
whose success was guaranteed with the
help of Pat Bailey. With steadfast support
and toe-to-toe involvement she has helped
to define and shape the career of her
husband, business partner and friend.
The Gil and Pat Bailey show has its home
on 930am WPAT. The recipients of numerous
awards, including one from the government
of Jamaica, they have proven that hardwork,
dedication and integrity in business will
yield ultimate success.
