Milini Khan
It was the early 1970’s and a
little known funk band decided to invite
an even lesser known singer with a dynamic
voice to be their new lead vocalist. The
band was Rufus and the lead vocals were
soulfully delivered by a powerhouse named
Chaka Khan. Now fast forward about 30
years to 2003 and experience a sense of
musical déjà vu. It’s
an over 90º summer day at the Central
Park Summer Stage and the sun is blazing
down on a crowd of well over 5,000 New
Yorkers, out in the blistering heat to
hear the supreme Chaka Khan. But there’s
another name being heard floating through
the crowd. A name that draws curiosity
and eager anticipation; it’s the
opening act, Milini Indira Khan. There’s
a new vibrant voice waiting in the wings
to make history when she performs on stage
with her mother for the first time ever.
The audience held its breath when she
took the mic, and then let out a collective
sigh of relief when they realized they
would not be disappointed. This sista
can sing!
Bitten by the music bug after singing
in a talent show as a teenager, Milini
went on to perform with Motown Records’
girl group, Pretty in Pink. However, reemerging
now a woman, her music has evolved as
well and reflects the fullness of her
life experiences. Currently in the studio,
with Stomping Grounds Entertainment, working
on her own debut album, Milini draws her
musical inspiration from an eclectic list
of artists ranging from Joni Mitchell
to Aretha Franklin to Prince. Though she
considers her music mainly R&B, don’t
be surprised to hear some funk, rock and
reggae spicing up the tracks in her forthcoming
release. Milini shies away from comparison
to her Grammy winning mom. Pulling out
all the stops when it comes to her own
unique style, she expresses her individual
diva-tude with humility, grace and power!
